Valentine's Day was once the ancient, pre-Roman fertility festival Lupercalia. Lupercalia had its own order of young holy men, The Luperci ("brothers of the wolf") who were usually between 20 and 40 years old. On Lupercalia, women who wanted to conceive would ask to be whipped by the Luperci with an instrument of purification called a februa, a kind of leather strip. This is where February gets its name. Animal blood sacrifices, feasting and offerings from the Vestal Virgins also took place on Lupercalia.
